About Us

The Victoria University Badminton Club (VUBC) houses badminton to VUW students, alumni, staff and also the general public. Our goal is to provide a friendly environment for everybody who is interested in playing Badminton. We do hold a variety of events throughout the year for competitive as well as social players.

The club has about 70 members, both students and non-students. We welcome players of all skill level.

A brief introduction to the VUBC history

The Victoria University Badminton Club (VUBC) began as a casual meeting in 1982, where a few people joined together for a social Game. The official beginning of the VUBC firstly began in 2004, registering and affiliating itself with the Victoria University Students Association.

In the first year, 38 people joined the VUBC. A few members (14) of the club also started to participate in two tournaments; the Wellington Badminton Association (WBA) Interclub competition and the Porcelain Cup. Since then the club activity evolved and an increasing number of players partook in tournaments like the Wellington Open, Business House League or Singles-/Doubles-/Mixed Box challenges.

In 2007, more than 20 VUBC members participated in various tournaments, winning 7 trophies and achieving second and third placing. Being a students club and therefore always being exposed to the problem of high turnover, the VUBC still managed not only to keep a stable number of membership, but even increasing it to 63 members in 2007.

Today, the VUBC belongs to one of the most successful Badminton Clubs in Wellington, achieving a variety of awards in Interclub competitions and being the runners-up for the 2007 WBA Champion Clubs Trophy. VUBC members enjoy the advantage of a comparably low membership fee (60 Dollars for Students, 70 for Non-students), despite increasing costs for court hire and equipment.

For 2008, the VUBC Executive Committee has set up two more Inhouse Tournaments, training sessions and social events to intensify the friendly environment, which opens up opportunities for social as well as competitive players.
